At Sweet Briar, an internship is “any carefully monitored work or service experience in which an individual has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she is learning throughout the experience” as defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
Students may choose an internship for credit or not-for-credit. Both internships require the student to work with an on-site supervisor who directs the experience and provides a final evaluation of the student’s performance. The student is also responsible for maintaining a reflective journal of her experiences. If the student chooses to do her internship for credit she must also acquire a faculty sponsor who helps guide the academic component of the internship and establishes the appropriate requirements to receive credit. Several majors now require students to do internships including: Business Management, Engineering, Arts Management, Environmental Science/Studies, Economics, Education and Psychology.
Internships are increasingly important for students who wish to explore career possibilities and gain work experience. The range of internships pursued in any given year is as broad as the many different majors offered in the general liberal arts curriculum at Sweet Briar – please see the appropriate samples of previous internship sites to find out more about the different types of internships Sweet Briar students are completing. During the 2007-2008 academic year over 90 academic and non-academic internships were recorded.
In order to complete an internship at Sweet Briar a student must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior. A student needs to have a 2.0 GPA overall and have taken at least three semester hours of course work in the field of study to which her internship is related, with at least a 2.0 credit ratio in this field, and may not be on any type of academic probation. A student’s application for an internship must be approved by Career Services. Students need to complete the appropriate paperwork for either an academic or non-academic internship in order for it to be recognized by the College. (Please see the links above for the right for the appropriate paperwork.)
