“My internship is a special project on metrics for the Operations Department with my main responsibility being to establish a system of metrics for code 30 (the operations department) for NSWC Carderock Division. – it’s really interesting! My days are sometimes boring (when there is not too much to do, like now) and sometimes very busy! What is really nice is that, while I work eight hour days, I come in at about 6:30 a.m. and leave around 3 p.m., which allows me to avoid heavy rush hour traffic.

The best part of my days are when I'm working with data and having meetings with members of the divisions (even though they can be a little argumentative). The worst is when I do not have an assignment. It’s really a great experience because I get to establish a system of metrics for the department and have a lot of interaction with others. I work in an office with people who are all older than me. While there are many young interns on the base during the summer, I rarely see them. I am learning how to assert myself with older authority figures as well as communicate effectively with them.

Another thing I didn’t realize I’d be learning how to do this summer is establish a routine. With so many responsibilities it’s very important. I wake up at 5:00 a.m. go to work, get off work and go to a trainer, then go coach and/or go to coaches meeting, finally I go home and crash in bed (even on weekends I have swim meets and lacrosse, because I'm a swim coach for the summer as well)!”

“My internship is going well. I am really enjoying this opportunity. My work schedule is hectic – waking up at 5am is not my favorite thing in the world! I am really getting into the middle of my project, which is exciting. While others might find numbers and graphs tedious, I love them. I also love the difficulty of establishing a system of metrics – it is hard to decide how to best measure the productivity of different divisions. This is my current problem. I have been working closely with the divisions and manipulating data in different ways, determining what measurements will actually demonstrate their effectiveness. I feel that by the time I leave there will be a system established which identifies the key metrics of each division.

This internship is really great experience, especially with my two majors – economics and international affairs. I am learning what it’s like working for a government organization. This is interesting and helpful, especially for career choices after college. I’m also learning a lot about what I might want to do after college; for example, I know that I DO NOT want to have a job where I wake up at five to battle DC traffic. I also have learned that I need a job where I am constantly busy and meeting new people.

The past week was one of my favorites at my internship – it hosted the International Submarine Races. The races brought together collegiate engineering teams from across the United States, as well as Canada, the UK, and Mexico. While I am not an engineering student in any way, shape, or form, it was incredibly interesting to watch the submarines race and interact with students. Overall, this internship is going really well and I am very excited to see the result of my work.
