Our Philosophy

The Sweet Briar Outdoor Program (SWEBOP) provides outdoor recreational opportunities that foster personal growth, responsibility, leadership, and environmental sensitivity through experiential learning in small group settings.

SWEBOP...

  • Offers activities that are fun and challenging for the students.
  • Offers healthy alternative recreational settings for students to socialize and meet new friends.
  • Teaches the value and conservation of the environment.
  • Teaches outdoor skills.
  • Teaches leadership skills through experiential learning.

Friday is College Night at Rise Up Climbing!
Meet people from local colleges as you climb for FREE!

Join SWEBOP at Lynchburg’s premier rock climbing gym, Rise Up Climbing (www.riseupclimbing.com). Climbing is FREE to all Sweet Briar students (guests are welcome, but regular fees apply), and all gear is provided by SWEBOP, free of charge. Contact SWEBOP 3 days in advance to reserve your rental gear!

Sign up for a free shuttle on Fridays, or go whenever you want to use the Sweet Briar membership pass. Friday shuttles depart from the Post Office at 3:30 and 6:30 pm, and return at 6:30 and 10:30 pm. Sign up outside the SWEBOP lounge to guarantee your spot on the shuttle! **If you sign up for a shuttle and fail to inform SWEBOP that you cannot make it, you will be charged a $20.00 fee.

SWEBOP is now offering a free Climbing Techniques class. The class will cover knot tying, the proper fitting of a climbing harness, proper belay technique (using a Petzl Grigri belay device), and basic climbing technique.

It is required that anyone who whishes to be certified to belay at Rise Up must take either the SWEBOP climbing techniques class OR the Basic Skills class from Rise Up Climbing (This class has a $20.00 fee, please refer to http://riseupclimbing.com/index.php/theAcademy-getStarted for more details)

If you would like to take the SWEBOP climbing techniques class, it is offered at the following times:

They can be found here for your convenience, or in the SWEBOP office.
